Calendar Confusion

Hi!!
It’s a Bank Holiday weekend in Ireland, courtesy of St Brigid’s Day. It’s still a relatively new addition to the bank holiday calendar and while I fully approve of having another day off, I remain unconvinced that early February was the best possible choice. If we were handing out new bank holidays, summer would be a much better time for an additional day off, than the current winter.
To add a bit of confusion, Google doesn’t even label it as St Brigid’s Day, but as Imbolc. Yes, the two coincide and yes, Imbolc is a Celtic festival marking the start of the brighter half of the year, but let’s be clear: the reason many of us have Monday off is St Brigid’s Day, not an ancient seasonal marker. They overlap, but they are not the same thing.
Imbolc is often described as the start of spring, but that depends very much on who you ask or who you are. If you are a true Celt (And then your year didn’t start on 1 January but on 1 November!), for you this might indeed feel like a turning point. If you’re not, then spring still officially starts on 1 March according to Met Eireann and February remains firmly in late winter territory. You can pick your system, but you can’t have it both ways.
And honestly, looking outside, I’m not inclined to call this spring by any definition. Non-stop rain and heavy rain at that doesn’t exactly scream renewal or new beginnings. If this is spring, it needs a serious rebrand.
Labels aside, a long weekend is still a gift. And rain or no rain, Dublin has plenty of free events that make getting out of the house worthwhile. So let’s ignore what Google calls it, enjoy the day off and see what the city has to offer this week(end). |

Donations in February:
EUR -9
(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)
If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.
The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.
This week the wonderful people who helped with a donation were Grainne and Orla. Thanks a lot! Keeping the Dublin Event Guide going is quite low cost at just EUR 200 per month. Your help is needed to gather this money and your support is very much appreciated! All money will go to the cost for the Dublin Event Guide!
In January we missed he target and are starting February with -9 Euro. Not a disaster, but also not good enough to sit back and relax. In February we now need 209 and I trust that you will be able to help.
With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses.
Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that Euro! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 4. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.
To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: https://gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)
In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via http://www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also https://revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)
To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here https://www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG
And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to http://www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! 😉
Thank you!!

+++ LIVE AID EXHIBITION
Live Aid was a two-venue benefit concert and music-based fundraising initiative held on the same day on Saturday 13 July 1985 in Wembley Stadium in London and in the John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia. The event was organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for relief of the devastating 1983–1985 famine in Ethiopia. The charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” in December 1984 was the start of the project. Live Aid was HUGE and had an estimated audience of 1.9 billion people in 150 nations.
Some of the performers at the concerts were U2, Phil Collins, David Bowie, Queen, Dire Straits, The Who, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Bob Geldof, String, Elvis Costello, Sade, Boomtown Rats, Status Quo, Spandau Ballet.
The National Library of Ireland is showing 70 photos and images from this decade-impacting, momentous event at an exhibition in the National Photographic Archive, Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2, D02 WF85.
The exhibition will be on display at least until March, possibly longer and will be open from 10:00-16:00 every Monday to Sunday (last admission 15:30). Admission is free.
If you are a child of the 80s or missed the concert, but have heard about it since, check the exhibition out!

+++ Dublin City Council Culture Company
Every week, the Dublin City Council Culture Company organises cultural events in venues in Dublin. They are events in addition to the normal events in museums, galleries and other venues. All events are free, but access is by registration only. And these events are POPULAR!! So when I get to checking them out on the Friday before they take place, the most interesting ones are usually already booked out. If you are interested, check them out here https://cultureclubdublin.ticketsolve.com/ticketbooth/shows (This week you only see a few, because every month a new batch is uploaded not in a rolling way, but in a month by month way.)
+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or something completely different? Nearly every subject is there! Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest price most of the time is EUR 12.99. Sometimes it even goes down further to EUR 9.99 and when that happens (about once or twice a year), I will tell you. But even 12.99 is definitely a good price for what you get! – Check out the website at https://www.getthislink.com/Udemy22 And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)
