Hi!!
January is nearly over and just like that, one twelfth of the year is almost done. That tends to trigger either mild panic or quiet relief, depending on how ambitious your New Year plans were. If your good intentions for 2026 are still going strong, well done. If they quietly fell off the wagon somewhere along the way, you’re in very good company.
Here’s the important bit: you don’t need to wait for the next Monday, the next month or the next New Year’s Eve to start again. There is no rule that says resets only happen once a year. You can restart on a random Tuesday in late January just as easily as on 01 January. Probably more realistically, actually.
My goal is to find a way to send the weekly Dublin Event Guide earlier and I didn’t do too bad in the last few weeks. But this week’s guide is arriving much later than it should and that one is entirely on me. Occasionally I go out on a Friday evening and last night was one of those rare Fridays. I was in Whelan’s at a great gig and started with the Dublin Event Guide a good bit later than is ideal.
What hasn’t changed is that Dublin still has plenty going on, even as January winds down. There are talks, exhibitions, gigs, flea markets and other small and bigger events that offer good reasons to get out, reset your head and enjoy the city without spending a cent. Let’s see what’s on.

If you have friends or family or colleagues that also enjoy cultural events in Dublin, let them know that they can sign up for the free weekly Dublin Event Guide newsletter at https://getthislink.com/DEGSignup

Donations in January:
EUR 175
(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)
If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.
The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.
This week the wonderful person (only one) who helped with a donation was Des. Thanks a lot! Keeping the Dublin Event Guide going is quite low cost at just EUR 200 per month. Your help is needed to gather this money and your support is very much appreciated! All money will go to the cost for the Dublin Event Guide! We are nearly there for January, who willhelp with the last EUR 25?
With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses.
Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that Euro! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 4. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.
To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: https://gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)
In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via http://www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also https://revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)
To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here https://www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG
And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to http://www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?
Thank you!!

Please note: To speed up the creation of the weekday section of the Dublin Event Guide, I am experimenting with a few minor changes. One is that I am not adding the full address of the venue to all events anymore (for now). If you don’t know where the venue is, you will find it by checking the event link.

+++ TRADFEST 2026
Every January the Tradfest happens in Dublin. This year it will run from Wed 21 to Sun 25 January and there will be Traditional Irish Music events in all four boroughs of Dublin (Dublin City, South County Dublin, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown and Fingal). There will be non-free events, but you will also be able to enjoy the Tradfest for free with gigs at the Dublin City Sessions (https://tradfest.com/dublin-city-sessions/), the Smithwick’s Sessions in pubs and hotels in Temple Bar (https://tradfest.com/smithwicks-session/) and the Smithwick’s Sessions Fingal in 10 pubs across Fingal (https://tradfest.com/smithwicks-session-fingal/).
–
The Dublin City Sessions will be day time gigs on stages in O’Connell Street and Henry Street and also in Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre, Jervis Street Shopping Centre and ILAC Centre.

+++ GIGs in WHELAN’S
I mentioned in the intro that last night I was in Whelan’s at a gig. It has been a while since I was there last and it was great to hear really great music again. ;-)
I am a little injured at the moment (a physio overdid a treatment – unintentionally – and I am in severe pain (in my leg) for more than a week), so we went to the balcony in Whelan’s main venue, because you can sit there if you arrive early.
If you are ever tempted to go to the balcony: DON’T!
The sound is by a far distance worse than downstairs, so even if you can’t sit downstairs, if you have the ability to stand, stand! The gig will be even better.
Whelan’s once was mentioned a lot in this “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”, but since the pandemic, nearly all free events in Whelan’s have been replaced by events with admission charges, so unfortunately that removes Whelan’s from our list.

+++ LIVE AID EXHIBITION
Live Aid was a two-venue benefit concert and music-based fundraising initiative held on the same day on Saturday 13 July 1985 in Wembley Stadium in London and in the John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia. The event was organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for relief of the devastating 1983–1985 famine in Ethiopia. The charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” in December 1984 was the start of the project. Live Aid was HUGE and had an estimated audience of 1.9 billion people in 150 nations.
Some of the performers at the concerts were U2, Phil Collins, David Bowie, Queen, Dire Straits, The Who, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Bob Geldof, String, Elvis Costello, Sade, Boomtown Rats, Status Quo, Spandau Ballet.
The National Library of Ireland is showing 70 photos and images from this decade-impacting, momentous event at an exhibition in the National Photographic Archive, Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2, D02 WF85.
The exhibition will be on display at least until March, possibly longer and will be open from 10:00-16:00 every Monday to Sunday (last admission 15:30). Admission is free.
If you are a child of the 80s or missed the concert, but have heard about it since, check the exhibition out!

+++ Dublin City Council Culture Company
Every week, the Dublin City Council Culture Company organises cultural events in venues in Dublin. They are events in addition to the normal events in museums, galleries and other venues. All events are free, but access is by registration only. And these events are POPULAR!! So when I get to checking them out on the Friday before they take place, the most interesting ones are usually already booked out. If you are interested, check them out here https://cultureclubdublin.ticketsolve.com/ticketbooth/shows (This week you only see a few, because every month a new batch is uploaded not in a rolling way, but in a month by month way.)

Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest price most of the time is EUR 12.99. Sometimes it even goes down further to EUR 9.99 and when that happens (about once or twice a year), I will tell you. But even 12.99 is definitely a good price for what you get! – Check out the website at https://www.getthislink.com/Udemy22 And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)
